Waste Management

Waste Management

Waste is generated daily by every person in every home, every office and every industry on every street in Nigeria. These wastes have generated several environmental problems and the attendant health and social implications of the problems of waste/refuse management could be ominous and frightening.

Hazardous wastes can cause or significantly contribute to an increase in mortality or an increase in serious irreversible or incapacitating reversible illness or pose a substantial present or potential harm to human health or the environment if improperly treated, stored, transported or disposed of or otherwise managed.

In most of the major coastal cities in Nigeria (e.g. Lagos, Port Harcourt, Warri, etc) and others by the Inland Waterways (Onitsha, Asaba, etc) you will observe that the waters have been abused and grossly polluted with all types of wastes that you can ever imagine. It is more or less a lifestyle for most individual and some unscrupulous waste managers to dump wastes into our territorial waters.

The prevalent increasing growth in public awareness and concern cum regulatory instruments from the Federal Ministry of Environment (FMEnv.) and the States’ Environmental Protection Agencies (SEPAs) are gradually monitoring the Individual and Company lapses and neglect on the issue of waste management. Presently; infringement attracts the imposition of stiff penalties and sometimes outright closure of premises/facility by the FMEnv./SEPAs.

COLEK specializes in waste management and employs various techniques such as:

  • Waste Inventorisation,
  • Characterisation
  • Segregation Schemes
  • The use of 4Rs of Minimization – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover
  • Treatment of Residues and Disposing in environmentally friendly manner (composting or landfill or incineration);
  • Maintain records of quantities, composition, destination and proof of disposal from which we establish a frequency Monitoring and Audits

Ultimately, with the state-of-the-art equipment, technologies and expertise, we make conscious and deliberate efforts at managing wastes in all ramifications without re-contaminating the environment; some of these are as depicted below:
